Starboard Tack

Starboard Tack has been pouring on Atlantic Street, just off Sahara Avenue, since 1972, when Bob Kostelecky founded it. For decades it was an after-hours bar where off-duty casino workers, musicians and locals came for a drink and a late meal. The building later ran as Gilligan’s Hideaway, and in 2017 bartenders Bryant Jane and Lyle Cervenka, who had run the downtown bar Retrocena, brought back the old name. They kept the nautical 1970s room, down to the fireplace, stained glass windows and tables from the original bar.

A rum bar, not a tiki bar

At the reopening, Jane told Las Vegas Weekly that the drinks would be built around the rum trade, and the bar now says its rum collection is the largest in Nevada. The cocktail list leans on it, with the house Starboard Taquiri, a Nuclear Daiquiri made with overproof Jamaican rum and green Chartreuse, and the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club, alongside local beers.

From the kitchen, around the clock

The kitchen never closes, and the menu mixes Filipino, Hawaiian and Asian flavors with bar standards:

• Pork or vegan lumpia, loaded adobo fries, and jalapeños stuffed with house longanisa and wrapped in lumpia
• Beef, sweet Szechuan pork or Filipino barbecue skewers with rice and peanut sauce
• Oysters raw or chargrilled, a fried clam basket and beer-battered haddock
• Loco moco, a pork adobo plate, kimchi fried rice and a kimchi Reuben
• Cream-filled churros with rum caramel for dessert

Shuffleboard and video poker

The Starboard Tack Shuffleboard Club, started in 2021, rents its indoor deck shuffleboard by the hour, at lower rates Sunday through Thursday, and takes bookings for birthdays, office parties and group tournaments. Sunday is shuffleboard night. Along the bar rail sit fifteen bar-top video poker machines running Jacks or Better, Bonus Poker, Deuces Wild and Double Bonus.

Happy hour: 3 to 6 p.m. and midnight to 3 a.m. daily, plus all day Monday. The bar and kitchen are open 24 hours.
