Moss & Midnight in Genoa: a dark-academia independent bookshop for fantasy, mystery and horror, opened in 2026 by Khaslynne Andrews and Lela Ornbaum.
Moss & Midnight is an independent bookshop at 2285 Main Street in Genoa, next to the Flutter and Buzz Cafe. Carson Now reported in January 2026 that Khaslynne Andrews and Lela Ornbaum opened it after leaving health care. The two met while working at a surgery center in Carson City, and the article says burnout after COVID led them out of that field.
From a cafe job to a bookshop
After leaving health care, Andrews and Ornbaum worked at the cafe next door. Carson Now says the owner of the cafe’s building encouraged their plan to open a bookshop in the space beside it. Andrews told the paper, “We had paint on the walls before it was even done.”
What is on the shelves
The shop is designed around a “dark academia” look. Carson Now describes a curated selection rather than a broad one, with fantasy, romantasy, mystery, thriller and horror titles, plus a children’s section. A separate dark-romance room is limited to readers 18 and older; the shop’s website calls it the Velvet Spell Room. Special editions, such as books with sprayed edges or collectible covers, are emphasized, and the shop says it facilitates specific book orders for customers.
Events and hours
The website mentions book club gatherings and themed craft activities. Carson Now also reported creative workshops, such as a vision board event, and book club meeting packages that include food, drinks and activities. Local artists sell dark-academia and fantasy-themed items in the shop, according to the article.
The article gave hours of 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday and Monday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and did not list Tuesday through Thursday. These were reported in January 2026, so check with the shop before a visit. The Carson Valley Visitors Authority also lists the shop at 2285 Main Street, and the shop publishes an email address for questions.
