La Strega

La Strega is Italian for “the witch,” a nod to Strega Nona, the folktale witch from a Calabrian village who used her magic to help her neighbors. Chef Gina Marinelli opened the restaurant on Town Center Drive in Summerlin in early 2019 and runs its kitchen as executive chef partner.

Strip kitchens first, then Italy

Marinelli finished at Le Cordon Bleu's Orlando campus in 2006 and moved to Las Vegas that year. She cooked under Michael Mina at Nob Hill Tavern in MGM Grand, under Sven Mede at American Fish and Shawn McClain at Sage, both at Aria, and under Scott Conant at D.O.C.G. Enoteca in The Cosmopolitan. Trips to the Amalfi Coast, Sicily and Bologna, where she worked in local kitchens, fed the regional menu she built for her own place. The James Beard Foundation has twice named her a semifinalist.

What comes out of the kitchen

Pasta is made in-house, and Las Vegas Weekly has given La Strega its Best Pasta nod. The current dinner menu runs like this:

• Bread: zucchini and basil focaccia with Sicilian olive oil, with burrata or eggplant caponata to add
• Antipasti: squash blossoms, fritto misto, Spanish octopus, braised meatballs
• Pizza: margherita, truffle pesto, the Fat Pig
• Pasta: rigatoni Bolognese, vongole, cacio e pepe, braised rabbit, Maine lobster spaghetti
• Grandma's classics: pork chop parmigiana, chicken cacciatore, black cod puttanesca

Grilled Spanish branzino, venison chops and a Wagyu skirt steak fill out the mains. Dishes change over time, so the posted menu is the one to trust.

The room

A hand-painted mural recalling the Amalfi Coast covers one wall, with white tile, globe chandeliers, hardwood floors and an open kitchen around it. The restaurant also books private events, caters and sells gift cards. Reservations can be made online.
