A family that followed Mom into quilting

When the Tibesar family opened Quiltique in Henderson in 2003, only one of them quilted. Jan Tibesar had spent countless hours at it alone in her sewing room; her husband, Bob, and their daughters, Kara and Jennifer, brought backgrounds in architecture, fine art, accounting and design. In a 2013 guest post for Moda Fabrics, Jennifer wrote that the sisters knew retail but not much about sewing, and their parents knew how to run a business, so they made a go of it together. More than two decades on, it is still a family shop.

Inside the store

The space on North Stephanie Street covers 8,000 square feet, with thousands of fabrics and a 1,000-square-foot classroom. On the shelves:

• Quilting cottons, basics, panels, holiday prints, wide backings and precuts, including Tilda fabrics
• Kits for quilts, handwork, holiday projects and machine embroidery
• Thread, zippers, bag hardware, cutting tools, presser feet and stabilizer
• Patterns and books for quilts, bags and cross stitch, plus a clearance section

BERNINA sales and service

Quiltique has been an authorized BERNINA dealer for 20 years and a BERNINA Excellence Dealer for 19 of them. It carries the current lineup, will order a model it does not have on the floor, and offers financing through BERNINA USA. The service bench does clean, oil and adjust work on newer BERNINA machines, sergers and embroidery modules, first come, first served. If your BERNINA is older, call before bringing it in, since parts can be hard to find.

Classes and the Sewcialites club

The calendar runs from Beginning Sewing and the Piece Making Basics quilting series to binding, aprons, rag quilts and holiday projects. Students can bring any brand of machine or rent a BERNINA for $7.50 a class. Regulars can join Sewcialites, a club sold in four-month terms with two teacher-supported sewing days a month, open classroom time and member discounts.
