Leslie Marroquin’s all-vegan restaurant on West Lake Mead: crispy chick’n sandwiches, Philly cheeze steaks, avocado tacos and raw cheezecake.

The van broke down, so the pop-up got a kitchen

Leslie Marroquin started Garden Grill as a vegan pop-up, cooking out of a 10-by-10 space at festivals and events around Las Vegas, where its lines often ran longer than the ones at the non-vegan stands. By the third year, the van that hauled everything kept breaking down and finally blew a head gasket. Marroquin looked at a food trailer instead, lost it after waiting too long to apply for the loan, and kept thinking about a vacant space she had spotted on West Lake Mead Boulevard on her daily drive to Sprouts. When Vegans, Baby covered the move in early 2019, the pop-up was five years old and the vegan community was chipping in through a crowdfunding campaign to help build out the restaurant.

What to order

Everything is plant-based, and the menu flags dishes that are gluten free or soy free, with swaps offered on several plates.

  • Chick’n sandwiches three ways, crispy, buffalo or blackened, each with fries; Vegans, Baby called the crispy one perhaps the best chicken sandwich in town
  • A Philly cheeze steak with mushrooms, peppers and onions on a hoagie roll
  • Beer-battered avocado tacos with cabbage, cilantro pepita dressing and Sriracha
  • Carne asada fries, and beer-battered crimini mushrooms with house dill sauce
  • The Caesar’s Envy wrap: blackened chick’n, quinoa, corn and edamame in a spinach tortilla

Kids can get a cheeze quesadilla or chick’n strips with fries, chips or apple slices. Dessert means soft serve, root beer and orange cream floats, or cheezecake by the slice, including raw New York-style and chocolate versions that are free of gluten and soy. To drink there are Jones fountain sodas, fresh young Thai coconuts and jamaica, the hibiscus iced tea.

Hours: Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Online ordering is linked from the restaurant’s website.
