Family Music Centers: Jim Mason’s Three-Decade Music Store
Berklee-trained musician Jim Mason worked the Las Vegas Strip as a player from the 1970s onward, then opened Family Music Centers as a small piano and organ shop in Henderson in 1995. Three decades later Family Music Centers has grown into Nevada’s largest full-line music store with three valley locations and the largest music-lesson program in the state — over 1.8 million lessons taught since founding. The flagship at 2700 East Sunset Road sits in east Las Vegas, with additional stores at 7280 West Azure Drive in Centennial Hills and at 1631 West Craig Road in North Las Vegas.
Family Music Centers carries pianos, guitars, drums, band and orchestra instruments, recording gear, sheet music, and accessories, alongside the core lesson program that distinguishes the operation from instrument-only retail. Mason’s background as a working Las Vegas musician gives the shop a credibility with valley players that pure-retail operations don’t share. Three valley locations also mean the lesson program can place students with instructors close to home rather than driving across the valley to a single anchor store.
Family Music Centers in the Las Vegas Valley
Las Vegas has one of the most active working-musician populations in the country, and Family Music Centers has been the locally owned alternative to national music-chain retail since 1995. The Sunset Road flagship is a five-minute drive from McLeod and Eastern, central to the East Las Vegas residential band-and-orchestra student population. Across the three valley stores, Family Music Centers anchors the Las Vegas Valley’s independent music-instrument economy.
