Cactus Joe’s Blue Diamond Nursery

Garden Nursery, Las Vegas

Listed Researched from public sources.

Joe Davidson’s seven-acre cactus and native-plant nursery on Blue Diamond Road near Red Rock, with desert yard art and a wedding garden.

Past Blue Diamond, on the road to Red Rock

Take West Charleston through Red Rock Canyon, or head west on Blue Diamond Road and bear right at the Red Rock turnoff, and you reach Cactus Joe’s Blue Diamond Nursery: seven acres of cactus, agave and desert garden at the base of the Spring Mountains, about two miles past the town of Blue Diamond.

The man on the sign

Joe Davidson laid railroad track and sailed the globe before the desert claimed him. In the late 1980s he spent his weekends hiking Red Rock, and in 1989 he came across a small nursery on Blue Diamond Road and bought it. He still lives on the property. Building it out took, as he told Channel 13, a lot of blood, sweat and tears and no money to speak of.

Plants that belong here

Davidson’s view is that Las Vegas made its mistakes trying to look like Southern California or Florida. His stock leans the other way, toward plants that, once established, can go a year and a half or more without another drink. Expect:

  • Cactus varieties and agave
  • Native Nevada plants and other drought-tolerant landscape plants
  • Joshua trees, which the nursery sells as an authorized retailer
  • Indoor plants

Through its nonprofit arm, Desert Love Native Plants, the team is propagating native species that are not yet sold commercially.

Yard art, rocks and skeletons

Decor is set out among the plants: saguaro skeletons 7 to 15 feet tall, cholla skeletons, steel cutouts of saguaros, scorpions and aliens, concrete statues, glazed pots and planters, rainbow glass, petrified wood, boulders and mineral specimens.

Weddings, markets and slow mornings

The gardens and greenhouses also host weddings with Red Rock in the background. The nursery lists ceremonies from $750, with reception space planned for 2027. Quarterly markets bring in local makers and growers, and local teachers lead outdoor yoga, sound baths, breathwork and nature journaling.

Hours: Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
