Amber Unicorn Books: Myrna Donato’s Used and Antiquarian Bookstore
Lou and Myrna Donato founded Amber Unicorn Books in Las Vegas in 1981, building on Lou’s earlier San Diego shop Book Stop III. They sold the original location in 1997 and opened the current South Decatur footprint in 2008, where Myrna has continued running the shop after Lou’s death. Amber Unicorn Books carries used and antiquarian titles and remains one of the few independent bookstores of its scale in Southern Nevada — Saveur magazine called it “all hail the king and queen of books.”
Amber Unicorn Books is an ABAA-affiliated antiquarian seller — a credential that requires a multi-year vetting process and full ethical-standards compliance. The Decatur Boulevard storefront at 2101 South Decatur is one of the few brick-and-mortar antiquarian operations in the Las Vegas Valley still buying and selling rare and out-of-print titles after four-plus decades.
Amber Unicorn Books in the Las Vegas Valley
Independent bookstores in the Las Vegas Valley have thinned dramatically over the past two decades; Amber Unicorn Books is one of the survivors. The Donato family’s continuous presence in the Las Vegas used-book trade since 1981 puts the shop in the same multi-decade independent-retail category as Plant World on Charleston or Atomic Liquors on Fremont.
