The Sand Dollar Lounge: Direct Lineage to the 1976 Sand Dollar Blues Bar
The original Sand Dollar Blues Bar opened in 1976 and hosted Muddy Waters, B.B. King, and Mick Jagger before closing in 2007. The bar reopened in 2009 on Spring Mountain Road in Chinatown, and Nathan Grates and Anthony Jamison took it over in 2015 with a vision of restoring its original blues-and-cocktail-bar identity. In 2022 Grates and Jamison partnered with the Plaza Hotel & Casino downtown to open a second location, anchoring craft cocktails and live music in two of the most distinctive musical neighborhoods in the Las Vegas Valley.
The Sand Dollar Lounge runs nightly live music — primarily blues, jazz, and rock — alongside a craft cocktail program that draws on the bar’s long history while operating to current cocktail-bar standards. The 3355 Spring Mountain Road location anchors the operation in Las Vegas Chinatown; the Plaza Hotel location brings the same programming to downtown’s Fremont corridor.
The Sand Dollar Lounge in the Las Vegas Valley
Few Las Vegas bars carry direct lineage to the city’s 1970s music scene; The Sand Dollar Lounge is one of them. The Muddy Waters and B.B. King performances of the original Sand Dollar are part of the Las Vegas Valley’s blues history, and the current operation by Nathan Grates and Anthony Jamison has carried that programming forward across two locations and three valley neighborhoods.
