The Bagel Cafe

Restaurant, Las Vegas Valley

Listed Researched from public sources.

Savvas and Shari Andrews's family-run New York deli on North Buffalo since 1996: boiled-and-baked bagels, Brooklyn smoked fish and an in-house bakery.

Every bagel at The Bagel Cafe is made on site the old way, boiled and then baked. The daily list runs past twenty kinds, from plain, salt and pumpernickel to bialys, jalapeño cheddar, super egg and spinach feta, with gluten-free plain, everything and cinnamon raisin. The cream cheeses are whipped every day, including scallion, olive pimento and cinnamon raisin walnut.

How a Long Island family ended up on Buffalo

Savvas and Shari Andrews moved to Las Vegas from Long Island in the mid-1990s with three young children. They saw plenty of casino restaurants, buffets and chains, but few family-run places that felt like home to transplanted New Yorkers, and they have run The Bagel Cafe on North Buffalo Drive since 1996. When the cafe turned 20, the Review-Journal reported that Savvas came to the U.S. from Cyprus at 20, studied business at Baruch College in New York, and worked in Greek restaurants to learn the trade. Most of the recipes are his, and he told the paper that a bagel made in 1996 should taste the same as one made today.

Deli counter, kitchen and bakery

  • Nova, lox, whitefish and other smoked fish, hand sliced and flown in weekly from Brooklyn
  • Corned beef cooked in the kitchen's own pickling spice, pastrami, and turkey roasted on the bone, piled onto homemade breads such as rye
  • Challah French toast, cheese blintzes, matzoh brei and crab cake Benedict for breakfast
  • Matzoh ball soup, knishes, kishka with gravy and stuffed cabbage
  • Black and white cookies, rugelach, babka, hamantaschen and New York cheesecake from the in-house bakery, plus custom cakes

The cafe caters with fish, deli and cream cheese platters, and hot buffet dinners such as brisket and chicken marsala for 10 or more. Around the Jewish holidays it takes orders for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur break-fast packages. You can order online for pickup or delivery, and the Bagel Cafe app earns rewards.

It sits near the Buffalo Drive exit off Summerlin Parkway, and in 2016 the Review-Journal found a line for tables almost without fail.
