Four generations behind the counter

The family behind Summerlin Jewelers has sold jewelry since the 1950s, when Larry Minden's father and grandfather owned four stores in Ontario, Canada. His father moved to Las Vegas in 1959, started with a display in the Vegas Village department store and later ran a shop in Silver City Plaza, across the street from the Stardust. Larry learned the business there, working beside him from an early age.

Larry opened his own store in Southern California in 1984 and came back to Las Vegas ten years later, choosing what was then the new Summerlin community in the northwest valley. In 2012 he moved the shop into a larger space in the same development. His niece, Melissa Nabong, caught the jewelry bug helping with holiday gift-wrapping as a child. She took Gemological Institute of America courses while still in high school, earned the Graduate Gemologist title in 2013 and became co-owner in 2014, the family's fourth generation in the trade. The store belongs to the Independent Jewelers Organization.

At the repair counter

• Ring sizing, prong repair and tightening loose stones
• Replacing missing, chipped or damaged diamonds and gemstones
• Chain and bracelet link repair, refinishing, and rhodium or gold plating
• Restringing pearls and beads
• Watch batteries, band links and bands, crystals, crowns, dial refurbishing, and cleaning, overhauls and timing for automatics

Jewelry repair estimates are free, and when a watch needs the watchmaker, the estimate comes back within a few business days. Customers are invited in for a free cleaning and inspection every six months.

Buying and designing

The cases hold estate pieces, fine jewelry, natural and lab-grown diamonds and gemstones. Because stock changes so often, the shop does not put its collection online, so this is a place to browse in person. For custom work, the staff guide the design and can reset diamonds or gemstones you already own. Appraisals are available, and purchases can go on layaway.

Hours: Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
