Moondog Records

Record Store, Las Vegas / Las Vegas Valley

Listed Researched from public sources.

West-side record shop on S. Decatur, walls lined with rare and used vinyl, deepest in rock, metal, punk, blues and jazz, plus CDs, tapes and audio gear.

A collection that outgrew a storage unit

Clint McKean only started collecting records in 2009. His personal stash went from a few hundred albums to a storage unit full of vinyl, and he opened Moondog Records near the UNLV campus, joking to the Review-Journal back then that the alternative was ending up on a hoarding show, buried alive under records. In 2018, Desert Companion found the shop in an 800-square-foot space in Campus Village across Maryland Parkway from UNLV, holding around 20,000 records. Moondog has since moved to the west side, to South Decatur Boulevard.

McKean still runs it and is usually the one behind the counter, easy to spot by his long rock-and-roll beard and glad to talk music with anyone. When he is away from the shop, he is often out hunting through Las Vegas and beyond for more records to restock the bins.

What you’ll find on the walls

The walls are papered, more or less literally, with rare and limited-edition records. Every genre gets room, but hard rock, metal, punk, blues and jazz run deepest. Beyond the vinyl:

  • New and used LPs in most genres, from classic rock to jazz
  • CDs and cassettes
  • Turntables and other audio gear, plus boom boxes, a McKean favorite
  • Band shirts, guitars, amps, music books and collectible memorabilia

Big-ticket rarities turn up too. The 2018 Desert Companion visit found an original, unpeeled “Butcher” cover of the Beatles’ Yesterday and Today, Russian Beatles pressings, and original Elvis Presley records on Sun. Part of the stock is also listed for sale online through Discogs.

McKean’s reach extends downtown as well: he stocks the records for sale at Echo — Taste & Sound, a vinyl listening lounge on South Main Street.
