An Armenian family bakery on West Flamingo

Naira Vardanyan opened Manan Bakery in 2012 on West Flamingo Road near Torrey Pines, on the Spring Valley side of town. When Bake Magazine covered the opening, she explained that she baked from family recipes her mother had handed down from memory rather than on paper, rooted in the family’s Armenian heritage. More than a decade on, she is still owner and chef, the shop is still family run, and the menu mixes Armenian home baking with European pastry and techniques picked up from around the world.

Mornings: boats, pies and fresh bread

Breakfast is where the Armenian side shows most. Look for Ajarski egg boats (one with basturma, and a vegan version), lahmajoun, spinach, cheese and zaatar pies, perashki filled with potato, beef or cabbage, chebureki and ponchik. Crepes, shakshuka, pancakes, a smoked salmon Benedict and a house breakfast croissant round it out. The bread shelf carries Armenian, barbari, puri, challah and French loaves.

Later in the day: the pastry case

  • Napoleons several ways (soft, crispy, dulce de leche), mille-feuille, cream puffs, éclairs and cannoli
  • Honey cake, Kiev cake, bird’s milk cake, Mikado, walnut and pecan cake by the slice
  • Baklava by the pound or box, including kadayif, plus French macarons and cookies
  • Sandwiches, wraps and salads, among them a falafel wrap and an Armenian salad

Cakes, boards and delivery

Whole cakes run from everyday chocolate, tiramisu, Nutella and berry to custom designs for birthdays, weddings, graduations, baptisms and holidays, plus Las Vegas-themed cakes such as a Golden Knights design. For offices and parties, the bakery builds catering boards and boxes, from charcuterie and Mediterranean spreads to breakfast boards and mini éclairs, and it also sells flower arrangements. There is a coffee and refresher menu, and orders can be delivered by the bakery or through Grubhub, Uber Eats and DoorDash.

Hours: Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Sunday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
