Trina Jiles’s Historic Westside café serves Southern breakfast and comfort food, with waffles, catfish, biscuits and grits at the center of its story.
Sweet potato waffles, catfish and a bowl of grits place Gritz Café firmly in the Southern breakfast tradition. The Historic Westside restaurant was founded in 2008 by Las Vegas native Trina Jiles, whose earlier career was with the Clark County Fire Department.
Jiles was the department's first Black female firefighter. She later worked as an arson investigator before focusing full time on the restaurant. Gritz's own history connects the café with the neighborhood that raised her and with a continuing emphasis on community service.
Breakfast on Stella Lake Street
The café serves Southern-inspired breakfast and comfort food at its Stella Lake Street location. A 2025 Review-Journal magazine feature singled out its Big Gritz Breakfast, with catfish fillets or wings, as well as sweet potato waffles and biscuits covered in sausage gravy.
Those dishes help explain the restaurant more precisely than a broad soul-food label alone. Fried fish and chicken share the breakfast table with waffles, biscuits and the grits named in the café's sign. The menu's appeal comes from that combination of savory plates and sweeter breakfast choices.
A neighborhood restaurant on screen
Gritz also appeared in the Las Vegas episode of Netflix's Somebody Feed Phil. Coverage of the 2025 episode describes Phil Rosenthal dining there with Donny Osmond and David Wild. The meal included chicken with a sweet potato waffle, catfish, butter pecan waffle, grits, biscuits and gravy, and peach cobbler.
The television visit brought a wider audience to a restaurant with an established local history. It did not change the identity at its center: Jiles's independently owned café in the Historic Westside.
The business offers online ordering and catering inquiries through its website. For dining at the café, its current contact page says seating is first come, first served and reservations are not taken.
