Named for a very honest taste-tester

JoJo’s Jerky began as Hans Hippert’s homemade jerky, made as gifts for friends and family. At one friend’s house, the family’s young son Jonathan, nicknamed JoJo, could not get enough of it and was blunt about what he thought of each batch. Hippert kept reworking the recipe until it passed, and promised the boy the company would carry his name. The company dates its start to 2004.

The jerky is made with all-natural ingredients and no preservatives, according to the company, and it is sold from a retail shop that shares space with the corporate office on Silvestri Lane. In 2018 the Las Vegas Latin Chamber of Commerce chose JoJo’s for its first member spotlight of the year.

• Beef jerky in Pepper, Teriyaki, Triple Threat, Black, Carne Asada and Hell on Earth flavors
• Hawaiian-style jerky in teriyaki, pepper and Triple Threat
• House hot sauces, among them Black Label, Hell on Earth and Triple Threat
• Dry rubs, a carne asada marinade and a raspberry chipotle barbecue sauce

The online store ships orders, and several of the flavors come in matching sauce and rub versions, so a favorite flavor can go home as a sauce or rub too.

Before you go

Visitors writing on Wanderlog and Google describe Hans coming out from the back to hand around samples of jerky and hot sauce before anyone buys. JoJo’s sells retail only; its website says it is not wholesaling at this time. The site lists phone help seven days a week, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Pacific, and a call ahead is the surest way to confirm shop hours.
