Willy and Cindy Webb care for Genoa’s historic Main Street saloon, a bar filled with nineteenth-century details.
Genoa Bar & Saloon calls itself Nevada’s “Oldest Thirst Parlor,” but a visit also reveals the work of a current local business. Willy and Cindy Webb bought the saloon in 2000 from Bob and Betty Carver, continuing a succession of owners who have cared for its Main Street rooms.
History in the room
The bar’s own account traces its beginnings to Livingston’s Exchange in 1853 and a later period as Fettic’s Exchange. State tourism coverage also dates the establishment to 1853, making it a familiar stop for travelers exploring Nevada’s early settlements.
Surviving details are part of the appeal. The front portion of the bar top, ceiling medallions and old light fixtures connect the working saloon to earlier versions of the room. Some lamps were converted from oil to electricity, while a red oil lamp is still lit for New Year’s Eve. A wood stove provides the building’s heat.
More than a display of artifacts
The saloon serves cocktails, draft beer and wine, and publishes live-music information through its current channels. Its Bloody Mary is singled out by Travel Nevada as a familiar order. These ordinary parts of bar service keep the historic setting in daily use.
Carson Valley’s tourism account describes another chapter in the building’s working life: during Prohibition, it operated as a soda fountain. The Carvers later restored its reputation before passing the business to the Webbs at the turn of the century.
Today’s visitors can find the saloon at 2282 Main Street in Genoa. The business website supplies its phone number and current information, while the room itself retains the accumulated details of many generations of customers and owners.
