Music Lessons Las Vegas: Patrick Worley on Helping Musicians “Live Well”

Patrick Worley has made his living as a musician his whole adult life. “It's been the only job I've ever had as an adult,” he told Neon in his 702 Alliance interview, and a big part of that job has always been private teaching. Music Lessons Las Vegas grew out of it: first a way for students to find him, now a directory that helps other Las Vegas musicians find students of their own.

Keeping what students pay

Patrick never wanted to teach through an academy or a music store. In that model, he said, the business usually keeps somewhere between 40% and 85% of what students pay. So he built his own website, made it easy to find on search engines, and filled his own schedule.

Once he was full, he turned the site into a business for other teachers. “The main way that it does it is it helps them get students,” he said. Search for music lessons, trumpet lessons or violin teachers in Las Vegas, and he says Music Lessons Las Vegas is often one of the first results.

About 20 musicians are on the site now, and he would like more. Some of the instruments it offers don't have a teacher yet, so he is still looking for musicians in many styles and genres.

About 100 students a week

Patrick keeps a private studio of about 100 students, roughly 50 hours of teaching a week. He works with beginners all the way through professional musicians. He spent about a decade in Nashville and still coaches professional songwriters, and he has trained musicians for roles in movies. “I like to teach anybody that really likes to practice and wants to attain their goals, no matter what their individual level is,” he said.

Built around the musicians

What sets the business apart, Patrick says, is who it is built for. “The business at its core is really designed to help musicians live well,” he said. It is aimed at musicians who take their careers seriously and want stability, and that focus helps students too, because “they're only gonna get people that are very, very serious about it.”

It is mostly a one-person operation. Independent contractors handle some of the marketing and SEO, but for the most part, he said, it's just him.

A paddle for the creek

Las Vegas shapes the work. The city is a hub for entertainers, and many musicians here rely on salaried positions with shows on the Strip, which Patrick says isn't how it works in many other cities. When a show is canceled or goes dark, a musician who isn't ready for it can be in trouble fast. “When you no longer have the gig, if you're not prepared for it, you're kind of up a creek, and we help them out with a paddle when they're up that creek,” he said. Teaching gives them a stable base of income between gigs, or a side hustle.

What comes next

Patrick has already started adding more ways for musicians to earn. Music Lessons Las Vegas runs a small boutique talent agency that books musicians for corporate events and weddings, and partnerships around town let its musicians do community outreach and earn extra income teaching group lessons. The plan is more of that: giving musicians “more tools in their belt,” he said, to help their careers and help them live well.
