For plenty of Hawaii families, a Las Vegas trip is not finished until they have loaded up at The Beef Jerky Store. The downtown shop, across from the Fremont Hotel, deals in omiyage, the snacks and small gifts island travelers carry home for relatives and coworkers, and Honolulu Magazine has called it a long-popular stop for visitors from Hawaii.

Steve and Judy Nitura opened the store in 1993 after moving from Hawaii to Las Vegas, before the Fremont Street Experience was downtown’s main draw. It started small, serving the local Hawaiian community along with residents and tourists. It was first called No Ka Oi; the Nituras renamed it in the late 1990s so tourists hunting for a beef jerky store could find it. Their daughter, Cathy Nitura, took over as CEO in 1997, and the family still runs it.

What the bags on the wall hold

• Jerky in beef, pork, poultry, seafood, exotic and meatless versions, with gluten-free, sugar-free and no-MSG choices
• Crack seed, li hing mui and lemon peel
• Japanese snacks such as arare, mochi, senbei, manju, dorayaki, furikake and nori

• Gifts, from lei-making supplies to insulated bags and store T-shirts

House-label items such as a natural crispy beef jerky and a clam jerky sit next to brands like California Jerky Factory, and the li hing mui, sweet and seedless or on the seed, ranks among the best sellers online.

Ordering from home

The store ships across the U.S., with free shipping on orders of $150 or more; Alaska and Hawaii add a $5 handling fee. From April through October, it warns, heat-sensitive items ship at the buyer’s risk, and melted chocolate is not refunded.

Hours: Monday through Saturday from 9:30 a.m., with a 5:30 p.m. close listed on the website; closed Sunday.
