Kate Aldrich and Tim Shaffer moved to Las Vegas from Denver in 2010. She designed high-end plates; he dealt in decor and had once raced mountain bikes. Their vintage business, Patina Decor, began on Main Street almost by chance.
An overheard lease
Local artist Jennifer Henry, a contributor to Desert Companion's 2019 Best of the City list, told KNPR the story that year. Retro Vegas was leaving its smaller space on the east side of Main Street for a bigger one across the way; Tim overheard it and the couple decided to open a shop of their own. By April 2012, Las Vegas Weekly found Patina Decor open in the old Retro Vegas storefront, filled with retro couches, swag lamps, stylized glassware and vintage telephones. By 2019 the shop had moved to 1300 South Main Street in the Arts District, and it made Desert Companion's Best of the City list that year.
Glamour over kitsch
The stock leans toward the 1950s through the 1970s, with the Sixties at the center. In a 2019 Sunset magazine feature, Aldrich said the shop is glamorous rather than kitsch or atomic, and that glamour brings back entertaining. What you are likely to find:
- barware, including Culver and Dorothy Thorpe glass in clean condition
- lighting, from table and floor lamps to chandeliers and pendants
- mid-century modern, Danish Modern, Hollywood Regency and Art Deco furniture
- brass, art glass and sculptural objects
- vintage clothing
Sunset's photographs included a 1952 first-production Harry Bertoia Diamond Chair for Knoll in its original upholstery and a 1974 pink Naugahyde sofa. Pieces by Paul McCobb, Gio Ponti and Niels Otto Møller have appeared in Patina's 1stDibs storefront, where it has sold since 2015.
How to shop it today
Older listings still point to Main Street, but the current website lists an appointment-only showroom on West Oakey Boulevard, with visits arranged any day of the week between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Call Kate to set a time, or browse the 1stDibs shop first.
