LAGE Design: Cecilia Schafler’s Nevada landscape-architecture firm. Led by Cecilia Schafler.
The name LAGE Design remembers Rosa Lage, the grandmother who introduced Cecilia Schafler to gardening and the possibilities of outdoor space in Southern Nevada. Schafler grew up in Las Vegas, studied landscape architecture at UNLV and built a practice around the desert landscape she knew from childhood.
Cecilia Schafler's firm
Schafler founded the business after working in both public and private practice, including the City of Henderson and JW Zunino and Associates. UNLV's account of her career identifies LAGE as Nevada's first entirely woman-owned landscape-architecture firm. The current company website marks its twentieth anniversary and continues to list her as president.
Her connection to the university has continued through teaching. She returned to UNLV as an adjunct professor after graduating, working with students at different stages of their architectural education. One of the firm's documented local projects is the landscape around the College of Southern Nevada's Henderson campus Student Union.
A Nevada team
LAGE now lists offices in Henderson and Reno. Its Henderson address is on Water Street, putting the Southern Nevada team in the city's downtown district. The staff roster includes landscape architects, designers, a senior planner and business and operations personnel.
The firm describes a process that begins by listening to the client and develops through collaboration. Landscape architecture is its central discipline, with planning and design considered together rather than treating planting as a finishing layer.
Clients can review the firm's work through its website and contact the team by email or telephone. For Schafler, the practice combines a long personal connection to the Mojave with the responsibilities of leading a design company that now works from two Nevada cities.
