Chuck Frommer: Four Generations of Meat Cutting on the Decatur Corridor

Chuck Frommer is the third-generation owner of John Mull’s Meats & Road Kill Grill, a butcher shop and barbecue restaurant that has operated in the north Las Vegas valley since 1954. The business was founded by Frommer’s grandfather, John Mull, a carpenter raised in Dutch-Amish Pennsylvania who moved to Southern Nevada in 1938 and opened a slaughterhouse and meat store near Gowan and Decatur sixteen years later. In an era when Las Vegas was still a small desert town surrounded by open rangeland, Mull built a business that served ranchers, families, and the growing population that followed the postwar boom. The operation passed through John’s son-in-law Don Frommer and then through Bill Mull before Chuck took the reins in 1981, bringing the butcher shop into its modern form and adding the Road Kill Grill — a full-service barbecue restaurant attached to the meat counter that has become one of the most celebrated casual dining destinations in the valley. The current location at 3730 Thom Boulevard sits just off Decatur in the 89130 zip code, and the fourth generation is already in the building: Chuck’s daughter Ashley is being groomed for future ownership.

The butcher shop carries a full selection of beef, pork, poultry, lamb, and specialty cuts, all trimmed and portioned in-house by butchers who work the counter the way the trade was practiced before supermarket meat departments replaced neighborhood shops. The Road Kill Grill side of the operation serves smoked brisket, pulled pork, ribs, sausage links, and sides — all prepared on-site using recipes that have been refined over decades. The restaurant earned a national spotlight when Guy Fieri featured it on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, introducing the Mull’s name to a nationwide audience and drawing visitors from out of state who make the shop a stop on their Las Vegas itinerary. With nearly 2,900 Yelp reviews, the business maintains one of the highest review volumes of any independent food establishment in the valley.

John Mull’s Meats & Road Kill Grill in the Las Vegas Valley

Seventy years of continuous, family-owned operation places John Mull’s Meats among the oldest businesses in the Las Vegas Valley — a distinction that carries weight in a city where most commercial establishments measure their history in years rather than generations. The Decatur corridor location has watched the valley grow from a modest desert community into a metropolitan area of more than two million people, and the Mull’s counter has served customers through every phase of that transformation. For residents who value craft butchery, honest barbecue, and the kind of institutional memory that only a multi-generational family business can offer, John Mull’s is not a restaurant to be discovered — it is a landmark that has always been there.
