Desert Rock Sports

West Charleston Boulevard is the route many Las Vegas climbers take toward Red Rock Canyon. Desert Rock Sports sits along that corridor at Cimarron, in the same shopping center as Red Rock Climbing Center. It is a technical outdoor store operated by climbers, with equipment for climbing, backpacking, canyoneering, caving and mountaineering.

People who use the equipment

The business’s staff history identifies Travis Graves, Mike Lorenzo and Steve Mallory as the ownership partnership formed in 2005. Graves has also appeared on the Climbing Business Journal podcast to discuss equipment trends and the specialty retail business, providing an independent record of his role at the shop.

The merchandise goes beyond general outdoor clothing. Desert Rock’s gear information includes technical climbing equipment and canyoneering products, including Imlay equipment. Its selection also includes climbing books, with Red Rock route guides available for people planning time on the sandstone.

Crash pads and local information

Bouldering-pad rental is one of the shop’s practical services. Refuge Climbing and Fitness independently directs customers to Desert Rock Sports when they need a rental crash pad, corroborating the service listed by the store itself. Customers can contact the shop to arrange availability.

Desert Rock invites visitors to ask the staff about routes, conditions, permits and camping. That makes the counter a place to gather local information as well as compare equipment. Its proximity to Red Rock and the neighboring indoor climbing facility puts it between two parts of the same climbing community.
