Copper Cat Studio

Mosaic pieces, stained glass and working artists share the space at Copper Cat Studio in Sparks. Owner Katie Packham built the studio around making art and teaching it, with a gift shop and supplies for people who want to continue creating at home.

A mosaic artist's working studio

Packham began her professional art career painting murals before turning her attention to mosaics. Her biography describes an interest in raised surfaces, varied textures and the way small pieces catch light. She teaches mosaic workshops and is also a trained yoga instructor; the business brings those interests together under its description of a healing arts studio.

Another full-time artist, Donna Smit, maintains a private studio there and teaches fused glass and mixed-media classes. Her offerings include glass jewelry, yard art, sun catchers and resin projects. Guest instructors broaden the workshop calendar with their own specialties.

Ways to take part

• Introductory mosaic classes establish the skills needed for later studio sessions.
• Stained-glass workshops cover techniques such as cutting and soldering as well as finished projects.
• Glass-fusion classes lead to a separate open-studio option for students with the required prior instruction.
• The shop sells mosaic and stained-glass supplies, finished artwork and gifts.

The current calendar also includes painting and pine-needle weaving. Specific projects and dates change, so the studio's workshop listings provide the practical starting point.

Copper Cat is at 300 Kresge Lane. Packham asks people traveling a long distance to call ahead because she sometimes needs to step away from the shop. KOLO independently featured her as Copper Cat's owner and a participating local artist during its coverage of Reno Open Studios.
