From Debt to a Decade-Long Waitlist
Gregory R. Struhl was working in the Las Vegas landscaping trade in the early 1990s when an opportunity surfaced that most people would have walked away from. Chip-N-Dale’s Custom Landscaping, a small operation founded by two men named Chip and Dale, had no contractor’s license and was carrying considerable debt. Struhl and business partner Jason Heep co-purchased the company around 1994–1995 and set about rebuilding it from the ground up — securing proper licensing, clearing the books, and repositioning the business for the residential construction boom that was about to reshape the Las Vegas Valley.
The timing proved decisive. Southern Nevada’s population was surging through the late 1990s and into the 2000s, and Chip-N-Dale’s Custom Landscaping grew alongside it. Struhl built the company into a full-service design-build landscape firm specializing in desert-appropriate outdoor living: swimming pools, barbecue islands, fire features, water features, synthetic turf, and hardscaping designed for the Mojave climate. By the mid-2000s, Chip-N-Dale’s Custom Landscaping was typically booked nine to twelve months in advance.
Surviving the Crash, Keeping the Crew
The 2008–2009 recession hit Las Vegas harder than nearly any other American city, and Chip-N-Dale’s Custom Landscaping lost roughly fifty percent of its revenue. Struhl chose to retain his core workforce rather than gut the company, a decision rooted in the fact that many of his employees had been with Chip-N-Dale’s Custom Landscaping for ten to twenty-five years. The gamble paid off. As the valley recovered, the company rebuilt to approximately $6.5 million in annual revenue and a team of around sixty employees — without having to retrain from scratch.
Chip-N-Dale’s Custom Landscaping holds a BBB A+ rating and has been accredited with the Better Business Bureau since 2015. The company is also a member of the National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP). Its headquarters at 3001 Westwood Drive sits just west of the Strip in a light-industrial pocket of Las Vegas that has housed contractors and tradespeople for decades.
Chip-N-Dale’s Custom Landscaping in the Las Vegas Valley
In a desert metro where outdoor space is the primary living space for eight months of the year, landscape design carries more weight than it does in most American cities. Chip-N-Dale’s Custom Landscaping has shaped backyards across Las Vegas, Henderson, Summerlin, and North Las Vegas for nearly three decades, building the pools, patios, and outdoor kitchens that define how valley residents actually use their homes. The company’s longevity through both the boom and the bust makes it one of the more enduring names in Southern Nevada’s residential construction trades.
