Chris and Erin's East Sunset Road shop pairing oddities and taxidermy with comic books and RPGs, plus insect-pinning classes, D&D nights and night markets.
The shop was almost called Cemetery Polka, after a Tom Waits song. Owners Chris Kmit and his wife, Erin, swapped in "pulp" as a nod to the pulp magazines that helped give rise to comic books, and that pairing still defines the place: an oddities shop and a comic shop sharing one storefront on East Sunset Road.
How it came together
According to the Review-Journal, the couple met at a rock club where Erin, a former taxidermist, sold jewelry, bones and wet specimens from a table, and Chris, who earned a degree in animation and once hoped to draw comics, bought from her. They ran a car-wrap business before opening Cemetery Pulp in December 2021 in a former cell phone store a few miles from the airport. Inside, the walls are covered in artful adhesive wraps, and the shop calls itself the home for the weird and nerdy.
On the shelves
- Taxidermy, animal skulls and bones, and wet specimens in jars
- Glowing uranium glassware, antique photographs and other antiques
- Comic books and role-playing games
- Gothic clothing and accessories from brands such as Killstar
- Books like guides to cemeteries worth visiting, plus coffee, including the Cannibal Corpse cold brew the shop was one of the first to carry
Classes and nights out
The calendar is busy. Erin leads insect pinning classes for beetles, butterflies and moths; the beetle class supplies the specimen and materials, and you take the finished piece home. Guest classes from Gotham Taxidermy cover starling and jackalope taxidermy and rat articulation, and the shop also runs miniature painting sessions, Dungeons & Dragons one-shots (some open to all ages), concerts, and night markets with local artists and vendors. The owners say every night market has raised money for a local animal shelter or charity. Class fees are nonrefundable.
Hours: Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Friday to Sunday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.; closed Tuesday.
