Family-owned art store since 1957 on East Charleston and in Henderson: paints, airbrushes, casting and carving supplies, custom framing and classes.
Desert Art Supplies opened in 1957, and this year its website marks the store's 69th year in business. The family-owned shop, also known as Desert Decor, calls itself Southern Nevada's most complete art store, and its motto is "Keeping Art Alive." It serves students, working professionals and hobby artists from two stores, one on East Charleston Boulevard in Las Vegas and one on North Green Valley Parkway in Henderson.
What is on the shelves
The range goes well past paint and paper:
- Watercolor, oil, acrylic and fabric paints with their mediums, including Holbein and Daniel Smith lines
- One Shot paints and mediums, spray paint and Uni Posca markers
- Airbrushes from Iwata, Paasche and Badger, plus compressors, templates and masking supplies
- Smooth-On molding and casting products and Chavant modeling clays
- Carving stone such as alabaster and soapstone, basswood, Flexcut carving tools and woodburning tools
- Gold leafing, calligraphy, printmaking, jewelry-making and architectural model supplies, easels and instructional books
Not everything in the online catalog sits in the stores, but anything listed can be ordered, so call or email before making the drive. The staff also take on special orders for hard-to-find items.
Services and classes
Beyond retail, the shop does custom picture framing, computerized mat cutting, vinyl signage and airbrush and compressor repair. Classes are held at the Henderson store. The posted weekly schedule covers oil, acrylic and watercolor painting, pet portraits in watercolor and silversmithing, and workshops have included wire wrapping, beginning airbrushing and resin pouring.
A rockhound at the helm
In a 2024 Desert Companion story on Nevada rockhounding, owner Del Walkenshaw, then 81, was described as a board member of the Southern Nevada Gem and Mineral Society who leads monthly collecting trips around Nevada and neighboring states. The Better Business Bureau lists Dennis Walkenshaw as the company's president.
Hours at both stores: Monday to Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; closed Sunday.
