Black Spade Tattoo

Josh Glover, known to clients as King Ruck, grew up nearby on 20th Street and has run his tattoo business on Fremont since 2009, before the stretch was branded Fremont East. His shop, Black Spade Tattoo, first worked out of the Carson Building next to Donut Bar and Carson Kitchen. In 2017 it moved into two old railroad cars at Downtown Container Park that had housed Bolt Barbers, a space that doubled its size. Las Vegas Weekly reported that Ruck gutted and rebuilt the interior in about two months and painted a graffiti mural on the outside of one car.

From Ink Master to Fremont Street

Ruck competed on Spike TV's Ink Master in season 4, and the shop itself came back for season 9, with Ruck and Yovan Barraza, who goes by E.S., tattooing as the Black Spade Tattoo team. Plenty of customers are visitors: in a 2020 KTNV interview, Ruck said up to 45 percent of his clientele came from out of town. Today's crew page lists Ruck, Kevin and Schmoe on tattoos and Jen on permanent makeup.

Tattoos and brows

The shop takes anything from a one-inch piece to a full bodysuit. Its permanent makeup side draws brows to fit each face instead of stenciling one standard shape, and Jen's 3-D brow and microblading work has appeared in The Sunday Magazine.

Before you book

• You must be 18 or older with a valid driver's license or passport.
• Consultations are free; appointments need a $50 to $100 non-refundable deposit, and changes must be made by phone.
• Walk-in tattoos are first come, first served; permanent makeup is by appointment only.
• The tattoo minimum is $100. Single-session pieces are priced by the piece, and longer work by the hour.
• The shop pays for your parking on the day you get tattooed.
• Groups of five or more should call ahead to book the shop for a half or full day.

Black Spade also sends artists to weddings, conventions and other events. Container Park's directory lists the shop as open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.
