Two realists, two palettes

Basilica Tattoo is a custom studio on East Sunset Road owned by two artists who work opposite ends of realism. Vic Vivid does color, mostly portraits and nature pieces, and came to tattooing with a background in graphic and industrial design. Hiram Casas works in black and grey with a surrealist bent, setting hyperrealistic images inside dreamlike compositions with hard contrast and close attention to texture. The studio dates its founding to 2016.

From Havana to Sunset Road

Casas grew up in Havana and studied at the San Alejandro National Academy of Fine Arts, one of the oldest cultural institutions in Cuba, then worked as a graphic designer before he took up tattooing in his late teens or early 20s, when the craft sat in a legal gray zone in Cuba. After a few months in Deltona, Florida, he moved to Las Vegas, where his wife was living, and made his home here. He competed on seasons 13 and 14 of Paramount Network’s Ink Master. Talking with Las Vegas Weekly in 2023, he said every client in his chair gets a one-off design and that he keeps in touch with the people he tattoos.

The artists page lists seven more names alongside the owners: Masu, Omega, EJ, Daneris, Ash, Bryce and Eileen. Across the room the studio covers color and black-and-grey realism, illustrative work, fine line, geometric and ornamental pieces. Casas also takes realism cover-ups; a photo of the old tattoo is the place to start.

Booking notes

• Open every day from noon to 8 p.m., with walk-ins until 7 p.m. Pieces of four hours or more should be booked.
• Consultations by text at 702-500-1656 or through the website.
• A $100 deposit holds an appointment and goes toward the final price. Small fine-line tattoos start at $180.
• Bring a valid photo ID; nobody under 18 is tattooed.
• Cash, Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Apple Pay are accepted, and Klarna and Affirm offer pay-later financing.
