Comic books and a movie screen share a long history at The Sci Fi Center. William Powell's independent Las Vegas business grew from a comics shop into a venue for offbeat film, live performance and the people who follow both.

From Asylum Comics onward

Las Vegas Weekly's reporting traces Powell's shop to 1994, when it opened as Asylum Comics near Spring Mountain Road and Jones Boulevard. A move into Commercial Center in 2006 gave him room to develop the stage-and-screen side of the business.

Rocky Horror and its tradition of live shadow casts helped inspire that direction. With a stage, screen and projection equipment available, Powell broadened the programming into science-fiction and horror screenings.
