Opening Week, Worst Timing

Juanny Romero and Josh Walter were both working casino jobs in Las Vegas when they decided to open an independent coffee shop. Romero, a Korean-Ecuadorian from Queens, New York, had no restaurant pedigree; Walter brought operational instincts but no specialty-coffee background. They signed a lease at 3130 East Sunset Road — a stretch near McCarran International Airport (now Harry Reid) that sat across from Sunset Park and was, by Romero’s own description, “kind of in the middle of nowhere.” Sunrise Coffee opened its doors the same week the 2008 financial crisis began reshaping the American economy.

Las Vegas was Ground Zero for the housing collapse. Unemployment in Clark County would peak above fourteen percent. The city lost population for the first time in decades. Opening any small business in that environment was reckless by conventional standards; opening a café that served organic fair-trade single-origin coffee and scratch-made vegetarian food — in a town that ran on buffets and drive-throughs — bordered on absurd. Sunrise Coffee survived anyway, building a loyal following one neighborhood regular at a time.

From Single Shop to Roasting Operation

By the fall of 2009, barely a year into operations, Romero and Walter launched Mothership Roastworks, roasting coffee beans in-house at the Sunrise Coffee location. That roasting arm would eventually become Mothership Coffee Roasters, expanding to more than fifty employees and seven locations across the Las Vegas Valley. But Sunrise Coffee remained the original — the shop where the beans were first roasted, the menu first written, and the community first gathered.

Sunrise Coffee has accumulated over 1,711 reviews on Yelp and nearly 2,000 user-uploaded photos, a volume of organic engagement that reflects years of consistent operation rather than any single viral moment. Romero has been recognized by SCORE (the SBA’s mentorship network) and completed the SBA Emerging Leaders program, distinctions that placed Sunrise Coffee alongside growth-stage enterprises despite its single-location footprint.

Sunrise Coffee in the Las Vegas Valley

The Sunset Road corridor where Sunrise Coffee has operated for nearly two decades sits in a transitional zone between the airport, the university district, and the residential neighborhoods east of Maryland Parkway. Sunrise Coffee functions as the kind of neighborhood anchor that Las Vegas — a city often defined by its transient population — has historically lacked. Runners cross Sunset Road from the park for post-workout lattes; UNLV students camp out with laptops; off-duty hospitality workers decompress between shifts. The shop predates the specialty-coffee wave that eventually brought national chains and third-wave roasters to the valley, and it has outlasted most of them.
