Trained on Stradivari in Los Angeles

Juan Soto learned instrument repair and restoration under Robert Cauer in Los Angeles and stayed for 23 years. In that shop he routinely worked on instruments and bows by makers such as Stradivari, Guarneri, Tourte and Sartory, and soloists and orchestra players have trusted him with valuable instruments ever since. In 2010 he moved to Las Vegas to open his own shop, and Soto Violins has since worked for professional musicians and school districts in Nevada, California, Colorado and Utah.

His specialties are color and varnish restoration, bow rehairs, and repair of violins, violas and cellos. Lately he has also taken on guitars, vihuelas, guitarrones, harps and other string instruments.

• A rental program in which rental payments build credit toward buying any instrument in stock

Mariachi Depot under the same roof

In September 2022 Juan Soto and Claudia Rivera founded Mariachi Depot, which shares Suite 105 on South Maryland Parkway at the Boulevard Mall. It grew out of the valley's mariachi scene: custom trajes and moños in school colors for student groups, camisolas and accessories, and instruments set up for mariachi playing. Its violins are made for the store in Romania and China and adjusted in-house before they go on sale, and it takes purchase orders from school districts.

Luthier Julio Velez, born in Las Vegas and trained at the Galloup School of Guitar Building and Repair in Michigan, joined Soto Violins as a repair technician in 2017 and is now the team's guitar specialist. The two websites list slightly different hours, so call before you drive over.
