sewing equipment, classes and repairs in Reno and Carson City
A sewing machine is only the beginning at Sierra Sewing, Quilting & Vacuums. Fabric, tools, instruction and repair service are part of the same family-owned northern Nevada business.
Sierra traces its history to 1966. KOLO interviewed owner and manager Jared Lasko about the business and its classes in 2022, independently documenting the family operation. Today the company's website lists stores in Reno and Carson City.
Choose equipment, then learn it
The sewing selection includes machines and sergers from Pfaff, Husqvarna Viking, Baby Lock and Janome. The stores also carry quilting fabrics, notions and tools, giving customers a place to gather materials for a project as well as select the equipment.
Classes cover different skill levels. The calendar offers a way for a beginner to find instruction and for an experienced sewer to investigate a new technique or project. Dates, prerequisites and supplies depend on the individual class, so those details are provided through the current listings.
Keeping machines working
Sierra services and repairs sewing machines and vacuums, including makes beyond the equipment it sells. The business says machines can be dropped off without an appointment. Scissor sharpening and quilting services are also listed among its offerings.
On the vacuum side, the company carries Miele, Riccar and Simplicity products. That part of the business combines equipment sales with the repair counter rather than operating as a separate mail-order catalog.
The Reno store is at 8056 South Virginia Street, Suite 6. Carson City's location is at 2310 South Carson Street, Suite 7B, with its own phone number, 775-267-6694. Customers can contact the appropriate store about a machine, a service need or a class before bringing equipment or project materials in.
