Midtown Reno cafe pairing espresso and tea with house-made Turkish delight.
Turkish delight is more than a side treat at Pangolin Cafe. The Midtown Reno business makes the confection known as lokum and pairs it with coffee and tea, giving its South Virginia Street shop a specialty that reaches beyond the usual pastry-and-latte combination.
A trip became a confectionery project
Co-owner Travis Sandefur's interest followed a visit to Turkey, where he encountered the candy and learned more about making it. KUNR's account traces that experience through Istanbul and Konya and identifies his brother-in-law Joel Stewart as his business partner. The result in Reno is a cafe where the candy and the drinks are both central to the order.
The current online menu offers several Turkish delight flavors with drinks, including pistachio, pomegranate pistachio, lemon, grapefruit, tart raspberry and vanilla rose. The range makes it possible to compare nut-based, fruit and floral directions within the same style of confection.
Espresso with a more elaborate option
Pangolin serves espresso-and-milk drinks, signature beverages, tea and retail coffee. One named creation, Sand Harbor, combines espresso with cinnamon, nutmeg, cocoa, sea salt and honey-vanilla syrup, served over oat milk with honey cold foam. Its ordering page also lets customers select a piece of Turkish delight alongside the drink.
That menu shows the cafe's two interests meeting in a single purchase: a carefully specified coffee preparation and a small confection with a different flavor profile. Customers who prefer a simpler drink can use the espresso and tea portions of the menu instead.
Pangolin is at 955 South Virginia Street, Suite 110. Its own site provides current hours, pickup ordering and direct contact information. Physical gift cards are sold at the cafe, offering another way to introduce someone to the shop's coffee-and-lokum pairing.
