Reno yarn shop and online fiber-arts retailer founded by Laura and Doug Zander.
There is no Jimmy behind Jimmy Beans Wool. The name began as a nickname for co-founder Laura Zander, inspired by a Todd Snider song. Laura and her husband Doug opened their original shop in 2002, selling yarn and coffee in Truckee before the business and the family made Reno their home.
The coffee explains the Beans part of the name; yarn eventually took over the shop. Today Jimmy Beans combines a Reno retail store with a substantial online yarn business, giving local knitters and crocheters access to the same wider operation that ships to makers elsewhere.
A local shop with a larger fiber collection
The assortment includes yarn, knitting needles, crochet tools, patterns and project supplies. The business participates in the Sierra Nevada Yarn Crawl, connecting its Reno storefront with other regional shops and the people who visit them. Its own site also presents kits and projects for customers who want to choose materials around a particular finished piece.
Laura's account of the company's growth includes the addition of brands such as della Q and Madelinetosh. SmartStix tools grew out of an idea developed with general manager Shannon Flores. Those products extend the company beyond reselling yarn while keeping the business centered on making things by hand.
The people behind the shelves
Local business reporting has followed Laura's path as an entrepreneur, and the company's current history identifies both Zanders with Reno. The retail and warehouse operation brings the web business and the local shop under the same broader team.
For a visit, use the current Trademark Drive address rather than an older Reno location found in archived articles. The store's website and customer-support contact provide the current product selection and a way to ask about a specific yarn, tool or planned project before making the trip.
