Comic books and a movie screen share a long history at The Sci Fi Center. William Powell's independent Las Vegas business grew from a comics shop into a venue for offbeat film, live performance and the people who follow both.

## From Asylum Comics onward

Las Vegas Weekly's reporting traces Powell's shop to 1994, when it opened as Asylum Comics near Spring Mountain Road and Jones Boulevard. A move into Commercial Center in 2006 gave him room to develop the stage-and-screen side of the business.

Rocky Horror and its tradition of live shadow casts helped inspire that direction. With a stage, screen and projection equipment available, Powell broadened the programming into science-fiction and horror screenings. Later reporting described a mix of comics, graphic novels, collectibles, local art and performance rather than a conventional movie theater.

### The gathering is part of the business

The Center's current website continues to advertise live shows, movie screenings and access to premiere screening tickets. Its Film and Entertainment Meetup group offers another view of the operation, with Powell listed among the organizers and a history of film outings and watch parties.

Those listings span activities at different venues. Recent examples include cinema meetups in Henderson and watch-party programming in Las Vegas, so checking the location on the particular event matters more than relying on an address from an old article.

The retail and entertainment sides reflect Powell's interest in science fiction, horror and fan culture. Earlier coverage documents how he adapted the physical space to the production or film being shown, while keeping comics and collectibles part of the experience.

For upcoming programs, tickets or a visit, the Center provides a public phone number and email. Its website and event group are the practical places to check what is happening and where.
