In 2012 the patent covering Keurig's K-Cup pods expired. Brent Patterson, who had earned his own patents on a single-serve dosing closure back in 2006, saw an opening. In 2014 he founded Stella Brands Packing & Printing in Las Vegas to fill private-label coffee pods, starting with the in-room coffee market at Southern Nevada hotels.

## From casino tech to coffee pods

Patterson grew up in New Orleans and studied international business at Auburn University. He moved to Las Vegas in 2007 as director of IT for a casino development that stalled in the recession, then helped build an online booking business for Strip hotel partners until it sold in 2012. That hotel background pointed him toward in-room coffee.

## Printing the lids in-house

Early on, the hard part was the lids. Printed pod lids usually come from outside converters with high minimum orders, so Stella set up its own flexographic printing and die-cutting line. Other co-packers began buying lids from it. Digital printing followed in 2019, and in 2022 the company began producing certified compostable pod lids, developed with S-One Labels & Packaging.

### Two divisions

- **Co-Pack:** fills single-serve cups with coffee, tea or drink mixes for Keurig-style brewers, packed in bulk counts of 30 to 100 or retail boxes of 12 or 24
- **FlexPac:** CMYK digital printing of die-cut and roll-stock lidding, with no plate or setup charges
- **Supplies and equipment:** recyclable #5 polypropylene cups by the case, pallet or container, blank foil or compostable paper lids by the box of 1,000, and pod filling and sealing machines

The minimum run is 5,000 per SKU for printing or co-packing. Print orders typically ship in two to three weeks and co-packing orders in three to four. Customers can design lids and see proofs online, and orders can be picked up at the plant.

The facility sits on West Warm Springs Road in the southwest Valley, about 15 minutes from the Strip.
