The purple building on Maryland Parkway is home to Nuwu Art Gallery + Community Center. Southern Paiute artist Fawn Douglas and historian A.B. Wilkinson developed the Las Vegas space in the Historic Huntridge neighborhood, restoring older buildings for artists, exhibitions and gatherings.

Douglas’s practice connects contemporary art with Indigenous knowledge and storytelling. Wilkinson brings a background in history and education. Their work together places cultural identity, community participation and arts education at the center of the gallery and studio operation.

## Inside the exhibition history

Nuwu’s gallery hosted Douglas’s MFA thesis exhibition, SOOV, in early 2022 before its fall soft opening with Beginnings. The subsequent program has included Justin Favela’s Fantasía/Fantasy, Luis Varela-Rico’s metalwork exhibition Peso Neto and Lolita Develay’s High Roller Blooms.

Group shows have provided another route into the space. Weaving Our Cultures: Forward brought together women artists and public workshops. A Native Youth Art Exhibition, developed with Clark County School District’s Indian Education Opportunities Program, presented work by students from multiple tribes. The gallery’s published history records these as past exhibitions rather than current installations.

### A working arts community

The Nuwu Art Collective grew from artists with studios at the property. Drawing, painting, sculpture, weaving and performance are among the practices represented. Nuwu also works with IndigenousAF, its sister nonprofit organization, on events and educational projects.

As of September 2026, the gallery website highlights Crecer | Nunai, bringing local Latinx and Indigenous artists together. It also announces a separate Arts District retail and gallery project for fall 2026; the existing public gallery remains at 1331 South Maryland Parkway.

Visitors can check the gallery’s current hours and exhibition announcements before arriving. Artists and organizations interested in the studios or collaborative work can reach the team through Nuwu’s website.
