# Monzù Italian Oven + Bar

The first thing on Monzù's menu is bread. The kitchen uses no commercial yeast; its naturally leavened dough takes five days, built on a starter Giovanni "Gio" Mauro began in 2001 with apricots from a local farm, later joined by a mother strain from the island of Ischia that is said to be more than 300 years old. You can order a sliced loaf with whipped ricotta or cultured butter, or take a whole one home.

## A family address on Flamingo

Mauro grew up in the business. The Review-Journal reported in 2018 that his family ran Nora's Italian Cuisine on West Flamingo Road for nearly 30 years. When Nora's moved down the street, he took over the old building, stripped it to the outer walls over a 14-month renovation, and opened Pizzeria Monzú there in March 2018. *Monzù* is an old Sicilian word for a household chef. Born in the United States and raised in Italy, Mauro also owns Old School Pizzeria.

## What to order

The menu changes with the seasons. The summer 2026 menu included:

- Lemon leaves wrapped around beef, pork and lamb croquettes, in the style of Catania
- Palermo meatballs with currants, pine nuts and mint
- Hand-made pastas such as agnolotti and busiati with shrimp and Bronte pistachio
- Pizzas like the Vegas + Italy, with prosciutto, scamorza, ricotta, pistachio and date cream
- Hardwood-grilled hanger steak, Wagyu sirloin and pork chop, plus grilled swordfish

For a whole table, the Chef's Table lets Mauro choose the courses, starting at $55 a person. The bar pours an all-Italian wine list alongside cocktails made with house-infused spirits such as fennel vodka.

## Nights out and parties

Live jazz plays Friday and Saturday from 8:30 to 11 p.m. The restaurant hosts groups of up to 150 and handles full or partial buyouts, plus off-site catering, drop-off and pickup orders.

**Dinner:** Sunday to Thursday, 4:30 to 9:30 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 4:30 to 10:30 p.m. Lunch is for catering and group reservations only.
