## It began with games for Marines overseas

In 1990, John Coviello was a Marine deployed overseas, where game supplies were scarce, so he started ordering them for himself and the Marines around him. As he later told Nerdist, it was not a business yet; the point was getting games into the hands of the troops. In 1994 it became one in Las Vegas: a little shop that, quite literally, carried Magic cards. Coviello, now a retired Marine, still runs Little Shop of Magic, and the trade site ICv2 has called it the oldest and largest dedicated tabletop game shop in Nevada.

## What fills the shelves

The store has moved and grown since then and now fills a suite on Arroyo Crossing Parkway in the southwest Valley. The stock runs deep:

- Board games, from classics to new releases and Kickstarter pre-orders
- Trading card games, starting with Magic: The Gathering and Pokémon
- Miniatures and wargames such as Warhammer and BattleTech, with paints, brushes and hobby supplies
- Role-playing games, including Dungeons & Dragons books, accessories and a big selection of dice

One recent reviewer describes half the staff combing the store for the last paint set the online inventory showed in stock.

## Room to play, and games to borrow

For many regulars the draw is the play area, which seats more than 100 players and hosts the shop’s organized events; the online events calendar lists what is coming up. Then there is the rental library. For a few dollars you can take a demo copy of a board game home and try it with your own group, and if you decide to buy, the first day’s rental fee is credited toward a new copy. Rentals are picked up and returned at the store. Frequent shoppers can also join the XP loyalty rewards program.

**Hours listed online:** Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
