Grouchy John's Coffee started in 2010 with a canopy and one espresso machine at downtown's First Friday. John Ynigues had lost his IT job the year before. He added a trailer later in 2010, and in 2011 he and JJ Wylie opened a shop on South Maryland Parkway, helped, Ynigues told the Review-Journal, by the low rents the recession left behind. The pair still run it, now with a second shop in the northwest valley.

## John, JJ and a lot of Star Wars

According to the shop's own story page, JJ met John in college, and JJ is the one who will remember your name and your milk order. John is an original-trilogy Star Wars fan, which explains the art and collectibles on the Maryland Parkway walls and the smoothie names.

## On the menu

The espresso bar covers lattes, flat whites, cappuccinos, mochas, chai and matcha, plus nitro cold brew. The house cold drinks have names of their own:

- **Dora Cold:** horchata, honey and almond roca
- **PBM Cold:** peanut butter, banana and dark chocolate

Smoothies include the Yoda (spinach, kale, pineapple, strawberry and mango), the Lando (berries and banana) and the Ackbar (carrot, ginger, banana and peach). Food runs to breakfast sandwiches and tacos, wraps, avocado toast, oatmeal, parfaits and bagels. Soy, almond, coconut and oat milk are available, and the site notes vegan options. In a testimonial on the website of Colorado River Coffee Roasters, a Boulder City microroaster, Ynigues describes it as the shop's coffee supplier.

### Two shops and a truck

Maryland Parkway, in the southeast valley, has two rooms of tables with books and games and is open 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. Sky Pointe Drive, in the northwest, is open 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. with easy parking. Both take online and app orders for pickup or delivery. The coffee truck books for weddings, teacher appreciation days and corporate retreats.
