From the sidewalk on South Fourth Street, Chicago Joe's could pass for someone's home. It is a red-brick house built in 1933, with a small porch and white shutters, a block west of Las Vegas Boulevard downtown. The Collura family spent four months turning it into a restaurant and opened in 1975, and it has served Italian food at the same address ever since.

## Three generations of Joes

The family's restaurant history starts in Chicago. Maria Penacchio, who came to America from Palermo, opened a pizzeria called Nino's there in 1952; a banquet hall and a supper club followed. After Joe Collura's father died in 1971, his uncle, also named Joe, proposed moving everyone to Las Vegas, and the restaurant is named for that uncle.

Joe Collura started as a dishwasher at 14 and worked his way to cook. He took over ownership after his uncle's death in 1989. In a 2004 Las Vegas Sun profile, he said many customers had been coming since the beginning, and that he had attended some of their weddings.

## Red sauce, done the family way

This is home-style Sicilian-American cooking built on his grandmother's recipes. Dishes named in coverage of the restaurant over the years include:

- Lasagna and spaghetti with meatballs
- Chicken parmigiana and shrimp parmigiana
- Chicago hot shrimp, a house signature
- Chicken Angelo, veal marsala and stuffed artichoke

In the early years the menu was pizza, pasta and clams, written on the wall, with old-school plates like tripe, braciole and chicken Vesuvio. The menu has changed with the times, so ask about the current list when you book.

### Before you go

Guests eat in small rooms spread through the house, so seating is limited. The restaurant pitches itself for parties, business dinners and couples, and its owners have told the Sun it suits wedding parties coming from nearby chapels. Reservations run through Yelp; groups of nine or more should call.

**Hours:** Tuesday to Saturday, 5 to 9:30 p.m., last seating at 9:15; closed Sunday and Monday.
