Before he was a photographer, Mario Basner spent 25 years as a professional musician in Europe and the United States, with credits that include *Cats*, *Mamma Mia*, *The Lion King* and the TV series *Ally McBeal*. Born outside Hamburg, Germany, in 1968, he turned to photography after moving to Los Angeles and opening a small darkroom business in 2002. Since January 2017 he has shown his own large-format work in a gallery at Tivoli Village.

## What hangs on the walls

Basner photographs buildings, mostly historic interiors. His turning point came in 2013, when he found the abandoned Beelitz Heilstätten sanatorium in Germany; that documentary series has been on permanent view in his Las Vegas gallery since it opened. Later work portrays historic libraries, from Baltimore's George Peabody Library to the Stuttgart City Library, and his Louis XIII Collection was shot in the old cognac cellars of France.

Each piece is an archival print made to order in a limited edition. *Wealth*, the Peabody Library image on the gallery's homepage, is an acrylic-mounted pigment print about 25 by 45 inches in a recessed float frame. The gallery's site also notes that Basner showed work in the European Cultural Centre's Personal Structures exhibition during the 2019 Venice Biennale.

## A new room, same shopping center

After eight years in its first space, the gallery moved a short walk away within Tivoli Village and reopened in January 2026 in Building 440, Suite 150. Chic Compass, covering the opening, described polished floors and lighting built around each print, and credited Mario and his wife, Deanna, with shaping the room.

## Awards and students

Review-Journal readers have repeatedly voted it Best Art Gallery in the paper's Best of Las Vegas poll, and the gallery counted its 2024 Gold as its seventh win. Art sales also support the Mario Basner Passion Project Fund, launched in 2023 with UNLV's College of Fine Arts, which pays for photography students to travel for a personal project. Recent recipients have gone to Scotland's Isle of Lewis and Mexico City, with a trip to Osaka and Kyoto planned for October 2026. In April 2023 Basner talked about his work at the Las Vegas Southwest Rotary Club.
