Two cartoon mascots, Kotter and Maude the gecko, hang over the doors of Alternate Reality Comics, and inside they turn up again on posters, T-shirts, gift cards and nearly every wall, drawn in the style of just about every comic icon you can name. ## Thirty years behind the counter Ralph Mathieu has read comics since 1975, starting with House of Mystery and House of Secrets. When Dungeon Comics, a Las Vegas shop founded in 1987, came up for sale, he bought it and began running it at the start of 1995 as Alternate Reality Comics. His wife, Kate, found the store as a student and met Ralph there; in 1997 he proposed to her in the letters page of Preacher #27, and she said yes. She later helped found Sequential Tart, a webzine by women who love comics. The shop is comics only. There is no Magic: The Gathering and no Dungeons & Dragons, just the books and what goes with them: - New comics, graphic novels, trade paperbacks and manga - Back issues, including Silver Age books - Collecting supplies, from boxes to sleeves Ralph says graphic memoirs and nonfiction comics are his favorites, and many of his long-time employees started out as customers, so asking for a recommendation is part of the visit. The store also buys comics from the 1980s and earlier; get in touch first to see whether your collection is a fit. ## Events Free Comic Book Day is the busiest day of the year. The shop also hosts creator signings, local artists and live music; cartoonist Tessa Hulls came in October 2024 to talk about her memoir Feeding Ghosts. ### Finding it The store sits about three miles east of Harry Reid International Airport, next to House of Cars, Rogue Toys and Stomping Grounds. ## Visit or contact Alternate Reality Comics 5300 S Eastern Avenue, Suite 130, Las Vegas, NV 89119 [702-736-3673](tel:7027363673) [Business website](https://www.alternaterealitycomics.net/) Researched September 26, 2026.
